Early Childhood Education (T100) (B.S.)

Bachelor of Science

The mission for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Early Childhood Education degree is to create the highest quality, early childhood educators for both private preschool and prekindergarten settings and early elementary school. The program emphasizes developmentally appropriate approaches to preparing children for school and continued development of literacy, creative, and cognitive skills in the early primary years. A heavy focus is placed on assessment and diagnosis of delays in child development and proven interventions for improving child performance. 

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Early Childhood Education will provide regional residents with an accessible and affordable degree that will prepare students for Department of Education certification in the area of Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age Three through Grade Three) and meet the new demands of the industry. This program will deliver a unified curriculum that will broaden students’ knowledge and provide continuity between early learning and elementary school learning. This gap between school readiness and school achievement has been a principal concern of regional partners.

The curriculum is designed to provide a practical hands-on application approach to understanding early childhood education and contains 21 credit hours of general education core requirement credits; 63 credit hours of associate degree course work; and 36 credit hours of Early Childhood Education credits. With the lower-division component of the B.S. degree built on the College’s Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program in Early Childhood Education, students who have completed the A.S. degree will, in most cases, be able to apply their technical course work toward the B.S. degree, saving considerable time and money that would be required for an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree to transfer.

The prerequisites for entering the BS in ECE are a completed AS in Early Childhood Management or a completed AA degree, a passing score on the CLAST test or CLAST exemption, and completion of the 3 pre-requisite courses for Florida Teacher Preparation Programs: EDF 1005 (Introduction to Education); EDG 2701 (Teaching Diverse Populations); and EME 2040 (Introduction to Educational Technology).

Program Requirements

To meet the minimum requirements for consideration for acceptance to the B.S. in Early Childhood Education program, applicants must:

  1. Have earned an A.S. degree in Early Childhood Management  or an A.A. degree.
  2. Submit a Bachelor’s Membership Application (PDF) to the Associate Dean of Education, Downtown Campus, Room A1174, 101 W. State Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202.
  3. Satisfy the bachelor degree general admissions requirements.

Foreign Language Requirement


Bachelors degree-seeking students must meet a foreign language requirement prior to graduation. Students may fulfill the requirement by completing eight semester hours of the same foreign language or sign language. Alternative options that will be considered include the following:

  1. Successful completion of two sequential high school credits in one foreign language as listed in statute 1007-262 and DOE Board Rule 6A.10-02412. The student is responsible to send official high school transcripts to the Registrar’s office for evaluation.
  2. Submitting an English translated high school course-by-course transcript from a country of origin, exits test scores or certificates not acceptable. Students must have an English translation performed, at students’ expense, by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Examples of acceptable services are Josef Silny & Associates and World Education Services.
  3. Also, appropriate College Level Examination Program (CLEP) level one and two scores in French, German, and Spanish will be accepted.

Courses are offered in Chinese (CHI 1120  and CHI 1121 ), French (FRE 1120  and FRE 1121 ), Spanish (SPN 1120  and SPN 1121 ), and German (GER 1120  and GER 1121 ) that fulfill this eight semester hours requirement. Students may use American Sign Language I and II (ASL 1140  and ASL 1150 ) to satisfy foreign language requirements.

Writing and Mathematical Skills Requirement


The Florida State Board of Education Rule regarding the required writing and mathematical skills was revised in December 2005. 6A-10.030 specifies the policies and procedures for implementing the requirement (Table 5).

Graduation Requirements


To receive a bachelor’s degree, students must:

  1. Fulfill the requirements for the chosen major;
  2. Earn a minimum of 120 semester hours with at least a “C” average (2.0 GPA) for an all college cumulative grade point average that includes Florida State College and transferred credits (excluding prep) in lower and upper division courses;
  3. Earn a minimum of 25 percent of the total hours required for the degree in residence at Florida State College;
  4. Apply no more than 45 semester hours in any combination of extension, correspondence, CLEP, University Credit by Examination and Armed Forces credits toward an undergraduate degree;
  5. Fulfill the General Education Requirements ;
  6. Fulfill the Foreign Language requirement: Students may fulfill the requirement by completing eight semester hours of the same foreign language or sign language. Alternative options that will be considered include the following:
